Causes of Crohn's Disease

In spite of plenty of research in this sector, the causes of the Crohn's disease are still largely unidentified. However studies have revealed that a large number of factors might actually be responsible for this disease. Some of the mysterious and complex factors include environmental factors, hereditary genes, and the immune system. Many studies however suggest that interaction with an outside bacterium or virus with the body's immune system can result in the disease, or that such interactions may result in damage to the intestinal wall, which might result in aggravation or starting off the disease too.

There is some evidence that Crohn's disease has a genetic component. While there is no simple correlation from parent(s) to offspring, the disease tends to "run" in families. As many as 20 to 25 percent of patients with Crohn's disease have a relative with CD or ulcerative colitis. There is also a higher incidence among certain ethnic groups.

Risk Factors of Crohn's Diseases

Crohn's disease can be aggravated under certain circumstances; the following may contribute to risk factors making the conditions of the disease worse; Use of oral contraceptives by women, adult appendectomy, smoking, left-handedness, and use of non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, antibiotics and strangely even the demography and the environment can affect those with the Crohn's Disease.

Researchers have been baffled by factors such as economical, educational, geographical and even occupational status affecting the risk of the Crohn's Disease. Strangely, the disease is to be found more in developed countries and is more common among the affluent white-collar workers and those restricted to constant indoor work.

Conventional Treatments of Crohn's Diseases

There is virtually no known cure for the Crohn's disease; however medication is aimed at improving ways of maintaining a healthy life style and suppressing the inflammation. Medication tries to heal the intestinal tissue while relieving the symptoms of abdominal pain, fever, and diarrhea. Having controlled the symptoms medicines are used to decrease the frequency of the Crohn's disease bouts of aggravation.

Some of the drugs aimed at damage control through this type of treatment are:

Corticosteroids:

Corticosteroid tries to suppress the immune system in general and is used to treat moderate or even severe Crohn's disease. In this genre, Prednisone and methylprednisolone are also available in oral and rectal forms.

Antibiotics: Some of the prescribed antibiotics for Crohn's disease are ampicillin, ciprofloxacin and metronidazole.

Aminosalicylates (5-ASA): This group includes some anti-inflammatory drug types such as sulfasalazine or even oral formulations of mesalamine, such as Dipentum,® or Pentasa,® Asacol,® and Colazal.® The 5-ASA drugs such as Canasa® or Rowasa® are at times administered rectally also. It must be remembered that these drugs can be used for primary treatment.

Immune modifiers: Drugs such as Azathioprine (Imuran®), 6-MP (Purinethol®), and methotrexateImmune modifiers, also called immunomodulators, are prescribed for controlling and healing fistulas in Crohn's disease. These drugs also perform the job of maintaining the disease in moderation so that it does not aggravate.

Biologic therapies: As a part of the Biologic therapy for those who have not responded well enough to conventional treatment, the FDA approved infliximab (Remicade®) as the first biologic therapy for treating inflammatory bowel diseases such as the Crohn's disease.
