Dermatology Procedures

Dermatology is designed not just for cosmetic purposes but for health reasons as well. True, dermatology can help you improve the appearance of your skin. However, it can also help you combat some of the skin disorders the public is facing today, including skin cancer. According to the American Academy of Dermatology, nearly half of all new cancers are skin cancers and that in 2003, more than one million cases of skin cancer will be diagnosed in just the U.S. alone.

There are various cosmetic dermatology treatments offered, but they all share a common goal, to make you look and feel better. CLICK HERE to view a listing of these dermatology procedures. The more information you know can help you make a better-informed decision about the dermatology procedure you are considering.

SHAVE BIOPSY - (or "tangential excision") slices a surface growth off using a blade. A "curette" does a similar task with a special scraping tool. These are often done to remove a small growth and confirm its nature at the same time. Learn more about Biopsy

PUNCH BIOPSY - is typically used by dermatologists to sample skin rashes and small growths. After a local anesthetic is injected, a biopsy punch, which is basically a small (1 to 4 mm diameter) version of a cookie cutter, is used to cut out a cylindrical piece of skin. The hole may be closed with a suture and heals with minimal scarring. Learn more about Biopsy

GRENZ RAYS - are a form of very mild radiation. Grenz ray treatments should not be confused with 'superficial radiation therapy' or 'superficial X-Ray' which were used for everything from acne to eczema back 30 to 40 years ago, and are still used in the treatment of malignant skin cancers today. Learn more about Grenz Rays Therapy

UVB PHOTOTHERAPY - is a treatment for skin eruptions using artificial ultraviolet light. The initials UVB stand for the type B ultraviolet, the part of sunlight that gives one sunburn. Carefully controlled, it is an extremely effective tool for significant skin disease. Learn more about UVB Phototherapy

PUVA - is a combination of psoralen (P) and long-wave ultraviolet radiation (UVA) that is used to treat several severe skin conditions. Psoralen is a drug that makes the skin disease more sensitive to ultraviolet light. This allows the deeply penetrating UVA band of light to work on the skin. Learn more about PUVA Phototherapy

ELECTRODESSICATION AND CURETTAGE (ED& C) - Scraping or burning-off skin growths (also known as electrodessication and curettage) can be used for less serious skin cancers, pre-cancers and benign growths. A local anesthetic is injected, and then the abnormal tissue is scraped off with a special tool. The area is then cauterized until bleeding stops. This may be repeated if the growth is cancerous. The wound will need to be dressed until it heals, and it usually leaves a small white mark.

INTRALESIONAL INJECTIONS - are the direct placement of a medication into a problem skin area through a very fine needle. Most often, a dilute solution of triamcinalone (Kenalog) is used. Acne cysts, psoriasis and chronic forms of eczema are treated this way. If too much medication is used, a white spot or dent develops, but usually eventually goes away.

CRYOSURGERY (CRYOTHERAPY) - is used frequently by dermatologist to treat many skin problems. Liquid nitrogen is sprayed on to the area of skin freezing it. Light freezing causes a peeling, moderate freezing a blistering and hard freezing a scabbing. It is used for acne, scars, growths and some skin cancers. Older dermatologists still use a swab to apply it, but the result is the same.

ACNE SURGERY - is the removing of acne lesions, usually by opening up comedones (blackheads) and pimples by using a needle or small pointed blade and expressing the lesions with an extractor.

MOHS SURGERY - was designed to eliminate cell re-growth. This procedure entails using microscopes and a special mapping technique to determine the exact location of all cancerous cells in the skin. Doctors are then able to remove the cancer without fear of re-growth from remaining cells.

PERMANENT HAIR REDUCTION (CLEARSCAN) -CLEARSCAN contains an infrared laser that can selectively target microstructures such as hair follicles. It is very effective for lighter skin types and, because of the relatively low absorption of this light by melanin, it is the best choice when treating darker skin types. Additionally, the ability to safely treat sun-tanned skin makes this the treatment of choice for active individuals.

LASER VEIN TREATMENTS (LVT) - CLEARSCAN vascular laser is a new laser using infrared energy and a new standard for the treatment of many skin conditions. CLEARSCAN allows your physician to precisely treat visible vessels, broken capillaries, spider veins, vascular lesions and discoloration of your skin. Your treatment will be tailored to match your skin condition and desired result. Conditions that can be treated with the LVT include Rosacea, Redness, Facial Veins, Telangiectasia, Spider Veins and Broken Capillaries.

BROADBAND LIGHT (BBL) PHOTOREJUVENATION - BBL broadband light innovative technology sets new standards for the treatment of skin conditions associated with aging, active life-styles and sun damage. BBL broadband light energy allows your physician to precisely treat fine wrinkles, age & sun spots, small facial veins and several other skin blemishes. Your treatment will be tailored to match your skin's condition and your desired results.

MICROLASERPEEL (MLP) - It is an intra-epidermal laser peel that precisely ablates the outermost layers of the skin. The procedure is individually tailored to the nature of the condition to be corrected. Skin conditions such as: wrinkles, scars, acne scars, keratoses, or pigmentary problems have been very successfully treated with a MicroLaserPeel.

PROFRACTIONAL (PF) - Resurfacing laser treatment for fine lines and wrinkles, acne scars, other scars, sun damage, uneven skin texture, and large pore size.

SKINTYTE (ST) OR THERMASCAN - SkinTyte is a special pulsed infrared laser that can selectively target the region in your skin responsible for improving collagen. This treatment is used to tighten skin, treat wrinkles and other skin blemishes. The wrinkles on your face, around your eyes and lips will soften as a result. This treatment can also be used on the body to strengthen collagen and tighten the appearance of aging or skin with laxity. Your treatment will be tailored to match your skin condition and desired results. You will notice long term improvement in your skin texture and tone. Skin conditions such as Wrinkles, Fine lines, Aging skin and Hypertrophic scars can be successfully treated with SkinTyte.

BOTOX™ - is the brand name for botulinum toxin, a protein which temporarily blocks nerve signals to muscles, allowing them to relax. BOTOX™ has been used in medicine for decades for the treatment of twitching muscle disorders, tics, and certain forms of headache. As a cosmetic treatment, BOTOX™ is used to relax the dynamic muscles of the face, which lead to furrows, wrinkles, or scowling. Botox™ is also an effective treatment for severe underarm sweating (axillary hyperhidrosis) where it functions to block the nerve signals that stimulate glands responsible for sweat production.

It is injected using very small needles, and is only slightly uncomfortable. There is generally no down time. Typical treatment areas include the forehead, brow, crow's feet area, nose, underarms and sometimes lips, neck, hands, and feet.

RESTYLANE™ AND JUVEDERM - are fillers made of non-animal-based hyaluranic acid. Hyaluranic acid is a natural substance that already exists in the human body as a molecule to hold water. Hyaluranic acid is used to restore volume and fullness to the skin to correct mild to moderate facial wrinkles, hollows, and folds as well as restore fullness to lips. Results usually last for 5-12 months, depending on the location of treatment. Results are seen immediately.

THERMAGE® is a procedure that employs a patented capacitive radiofrequency (CRF) technology called ThermaCool™. It has been clinically proven to tighten and gently lift skin to smooth out wrinkles and renew facial contours. The incision-free procedure is fast and easy, and requires no downtime from normal activities. Unlike lasers, the procedure can be performed on patients of all skin types. The ThermaCool™ device has been cleared by the FDA for the non-invasive treatment of facial wrinkles and rhytids. Results are typically seen in 2 to 6 months and can last up to 2 years. This procedure is an excellent choice for those not ready for a face lift, the downtime or expense incurred for one.

PHOTO-REJUVENATION TREATMENTS - uses Intense Pulse Light (IPL) and is a non-invasive treatment that treats pigmentation, redness, enlarged pores and fine wrinkles without injuring the skin's surface. The specific wavelengths of the Intense Pulsed Light selectively destroy small blood vessels, pigmentation, and brown spots of pigment resulting from sun damage. In addition, the heat energy of the light causes remodeling (new lay down and tightening) of the collagen in the deeper layers of the skin. As such, IPL corrects facial discoloration and rejuvenates skin that has been damaged from years of sun exposure.

VEIN SCLEROSIS INJECTIONS - are the gold standard (best) treatment for spider veins of the legs. This treatment involves the use of a soapy solution, Sodium Tetradecol, injected into the veins with a tiny needle. This causes irritation to blood vessels, which eventually scar down and disappear. Compression hose must be used for a period of approximately one to three weeks after treatment to ensure best results.

CHEMICAL PEELS – is a medical grade chemical peel involving the use of a specialized acid on the skin, which is taken up by precancerous, sun-damaged, or acne-affected skin. The chemical is left on the skin for a short period of time, and then neutralized and washed off. Several days later the skin that took up the acid flakes off ("peels") revealing newer healthier skin below. As a result of treatment, new collagen and skin cells are stimulated to bring back the luster and softness of healthy skin. Chemical peels are usually done as a series of 2-6 each, separated by 4 weeks.
