Acupuncture
Acupuncture is the ancient Chinese medical practice of inserting tiny needles into specific points on the patient's body. For thousands of years, acupuncture has been used in various cultures to treat chronic and acute illnesses, pain and many other medical concerns including:
How does Acupuncture Work?
Acupuncture may be used in conjunction with herbal remedies and therapies such as cupping or gua sha - or by itself. Acupuncture points are located on meridians (energy channels) throughout the body and correspond to specific internal organs or may be stimulated to increase the flow of energy or "qi" throughout the body.
Acupuncture for Pain Relief
Acupuncture works for a wide variety of medical issues, including pain relief. Research published by the National Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine, as well as many highly regarded peer-reviewed medical journals such as the New England Journal of Medicine showed that acupuncture is an effective treatment for pain relief and many other medical concerns.
Acupuncture for Wellness
While a stronger immune system is a benefit that is not as widely known as pain relief, more people are turning to acupuncture to fight off everyday illnesses such as the common cold, coughs and influenza. In addition, people with more serious immune suppressing illnesses such as cancer and human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) are using acupuncture to strengthen their immune systems.
Acupuncture for Emotional and Mental Health
For people suffering from mental health issues including daily stress, anxiety or depression, acupuncture can be an effective treatment. There is also strong evidence that acupuncture can be effective at helping people break addictions such as smoking tobacco and drinking alcohol.
Acupuncture is Safe and Effective
One of the greatest benefits is the lack of side effects. Taking pharmaceuticals to alleviate symptoms can cause severe side effects ranging in severity from nausea to birth defects. With acupuncture, when performed by an experienced, licensed practitioner, there are no side effects and most people see results within the first few sessions, if not immediately.
Acupuncture is Relaxing
Contrary to the apprehensions of those who have avoided acupuncture due to fear of needles, there is no pain when the needles are inserted or taken out of the patient. There may be a sensation of stimulation as the acupuncture is working within the body, however there is no blood or pain, as there may be when blood is drawn for labwork or a shot is given. In most cases, the patient remains completely clothed, and is asked only to remove shoes and socks so that the acupuncturist may have access to acupuncture points on the legs and feet.
Most acupuncture patients feel peaceful as they relax on the massage table during their treatment. Some even fall asleep, and will leave feeling refreshed and rejuvenated.
