Hyperbaric Oxygen

Overview of Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy (HBOT)

Hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBOT) is a non-invasive therapy that uses 100% oxygen under increased atmospheric pressure in a controlled total body chamber. HBOT as a medical treatment was developed with the assumption it would enhance the body's natural ability to heal. Today, it is an approved modality that is most often used as an adjunct or enhancement therapy for a wide variety of medical conditions.

Hyperbaric oxygen therapy is one of the most efficient methods of delivering oxygen to cells throughout the body. It removes the normal biological limitations of oxygen delivery by taking advantage of the changes that gases undergo at high pressures. At hyperbaric (higher than atmospheric) pressures, gases can accumulate at higher concentrations and dissolve more readily in liquids. In a hyperbaric oxygen chamber, a specially designed chamber that delivers pressurized oxygen to the body in a safe, painless, and non-invasive way, a patient's exposure to 100% oxygen can infuse their tissues with oxygen. The oxygen not only saturates the red blood cells, it also dissolves in the plasma, lymph system, and cerebrospinal fluid. As a patient relaxes inside a HBOT chamber, the body's tissues and organs receive a massive infusion of oxygen, resulting in remarkable benefits that cannot be achieved by any other therapy.

During hyperbaric oxygen therapy the patient sits or lies within a monoplace (single person) or multiplace (multiple person) chamber, as the pressure is slowly increased to between 1.4 and 3 times normal atmospheric pressure, depending on the condition being treated. Oxygen is pumped into the chamber and accumulates at higher concentrations due to the increased pressure. Both the pressurization and increased concentrations allow the oxygen to dissolve more readily in the blood, lymphatic fluid, and the cerebrospinal fluid that nourishes the brain and spinal cord. This increases the potential for greater oxygenation in tissues that may have a poor blood supply.

Hyperbaric oxygen therapy promotes physiological changes in the body that support healing and regeneration of tissue in diabetic wounds, injury from radiation therapy to soft tissues and bone, and revascularization due to injury or disease. HBOT reduces inflammation, and has proven useful in treatments for a range of conditions from autism to bacterial infections, fibromyalgia, and Lyme disease.
