Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy and Fibromyaligia
Symptoms of fibromyalgia are chronic, widespread pain and tenderness to the touch. There is also typically moderate to severe fatigue. Those affected may also experience heightened sensitivity of the skin, tingling of the skin (often needle-like), achiness in the muscles, prolonged muscle spasms, weakness in the limbs, and nerve pain. Chronic sleep disturbances are also characteristic of fibromyalgia.
Many patients experience cognitive problems, which may be impaired concentration and short-term memory problems, and inability to multi-task. This may be directly related to the sleep disturbances experienced by sufferers of fibromyalgia. A number of patients who suffer from fibromyalgia and have been treated with hyperbaric oxygen therapy have reported improvement in their pain severity, anxiety levels and fatigue.
Hyperbaric oxygen therapy is a relatively new treatment for fibromyalgia. However, initial studies seem to illustrate that hyperbaric oxygen therapy has a positive effect on the symptoms of fibromyalgia, including muscle pain and tender points.
A study performed by medical researchers at a Turkish military hospital revealed astonishing results when it comes to using hyperbaric oxygen therapy on fibromyalgia patients. This double blind, placebo-controlled study exposed fibromyalgia patients to 15, 90-minute hyperbaric oxygen therapy treatments.
Results of the studies showed that fibromyalgia patients receiving hyperbaric oxygen therapy reported a decreased number of tender points and an increased pain threshold. After 15 sessions patients recorded half the number of original tender points and twice their original pain threshold.

Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy and Sports Injuries
Athletic performance is highly dependent on the physical condition of the athletes'. The Hyperbaric chamber allows the athlete to recover more quickly and improves general health, which leads to greater physical performance. In a study involving soccer players in Scotland, the time it takes to recover from joint, muscle, ligament, tendon, and other types of injuries was reduced by 70% when the players were treated with Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy in addition to physiotherapy. The Hyperbaric chamber also speeds recovery from workouts by infusing oxygen into the body's tissues. This allows the athlete to perform better because he/she is fully recovered from the previous workout.
The risk of injuries is a potential hazard for all sports and can occur in even the most novice athletes.
More and more athletes are taking control of their recovery and coming back stronger than ever using hyperbaric oxygen therapy. A hyperbaric oxygen chamber creates an environment of increased pressure, which forces greater amounts of oxygen into the body. This higher concentration of oxygen reaches the blood supply, organs, injured muscle and bone tissue, damaged tendons and joints, supporting the body's natural healing process at a much faster rate. In effect, recovery times are reduced, performance is improved, and endurance is enhanced. In fact, the effectiveness of hyperbaric therapy has been well documented.
During the past decade, we have seen a growing number of individuals participating in sport and recreational activities. All indications show an increase in sport participation at every age level. However, the number of sport and recreational injuries as a result of this increase has also risen. Unfortunately, a primary cost related to injury recovery is the time lost from participating in and resuming normal functional activity. This has compelled health care professionals to seek more efficient and effective therapeutic interventions in treating such injuries.
