Neurotransmitter Balancing Therapy:
The most frequently encountered neurotransmitter related symptoms are:
- Depression
- Anxiety
- Insomnia
- ADD/ADHD
- Poor appetite control
- Compulsive behaviors
- Fibromyalgia
- Chronic pain
- Lowered ability to focus
- Sleep problems
Neurotransmitter imbalances can cause many symptoms and there are options for treatment. Many drugs and complementary therapies are used, but Targeted Amino Acid Therapy (TAAT) is another option.
Here are many of the drugs used to treat neurotransmitter imbalances:
- SSRIs & SNRIs (Selective Serotonin Reuptake Inhibitors & Selective Norepinephrine Reuptake Inhibitors) SSRI Examples include: Paxil (paroxetine), Prozac (fluoxetine), Celexa (citalopram), Luvox (fluvoxamine), Zoloft (sertraline)
- SNRI Examples include: Wellbutrin or Zyban (bupropion), Strattera (atomoxatine)
- TCAs (Tricyclic Antidepressants) Examples include: Elavil (amitryptaline), Pamelor (nortryptaline), Norpramin (desipramine)
- MOAIs (Monoamine Oxidase Inhibitors) Examples include: Nardil (phenelzine sulfate),Parnate (tranylcypromine sulfate)
- Others (antipsychotics, anticonvulsants, anxiolytics, etc.)
Other options include lifestyle changes and modification of behavior.
Complementary Therapies may also help (traditional remedies, exercise, acupuncture, massage, aromatherapy, relaxation techniques, etc.)
Complementary therapies are designed to complement rather than replace other treatment programs. It is important that you first consult your health care provider if you have persistent or distressing symptoms, to ensure that you get a full and accurate diagnosis. Always let your health care provider know that you are using complementary therapies and don’t stop taking any prescribed medications unless advised to do so by your health care provider.
Complementary therapies are usually used together with other treatments, or when traditional treatments have been unsuccessful.
