Breast Reduction

Breast Reduction

Breast reduction surgery, technically referred to as reduction mammaplasty, is designed to reduce the size of a woman's breasts so they are in better proportion with the rest of her body. Patients Medical’s staff provides breast reduction procedures to help women embrace their bodies and enjoy a comfortable and active lifestyle. The weight of large breasts can cause physical discomfort, skeletal abnormalities, and deep indentations from bra straps. Large breasts can also cause chronic skin irritations.

Women, or teenage girls, with large and/or sagging breasts can become overly self-conscious, which leads to a negative body image. We provide natural-looking breast reduction surgery options that suit a wide variety of needs.

During a breast reduction surgery, a board certified plastic surgeon will remove fat, glandular tissue, and skin, in order to create breasts that proportional to a woman's body type and shape. This can also involve re-shaping large areolas, the darker area of skin surrounding the nipple.

Who is the ideal candidate for breast reduction surgery?

Breast reduction procedures are performed to both improve a woman's body image, and to help her become more comfortable in her body. Heavy breast tissue takes its toll on the back and neck, and can prevent active women from running, working out, or even dancing comfortably. The best candidates for breast reduction surgery are women whose large and/or sagging breasts interfere with their comfort, or cause them to be overly conscious about their bodies.

In most cases, breast reductions are performed on women whose breasts have finished developing. However, in cases where larger breasts cause significant physical discomfort, the doctor may decide to perform the procedure before they are fully developed. We make sure our patients have had a comprehensive consultation so they understand what will happen during the procedure and to ensure they have realistic expectations about the results. It is not recommended that women have breast reduction surgery if they intend to breastfeed.

What happens during the breast reduction surgery?

The first step in the breast reduction process is to meet with the surgeon for a comprehensive consultation. During the consultation, the patient can discuss her concerns and go over her options with the doctor. After a full breast examination, measurements and photographs (photos are often required by insurance companies and are helpful as a surgical reference), the doctor will explain the procedure fully, as well as the potential risks and complications.

Pre-surgical care is crucial in facilitating the healing process. The doctor will discuss diet and lifestyle habits. Smokers tend to experience more scarring than their non-smoking counterparts. Patients may need to stop taking certain supplements and may be asked to diet preceding the procedure. An anti-inflammatory diet can minimize the risk of infection, and will reduce inflammation and scarring after the surgery.

The actual surgical procedures vary from patient to patient. However, most surgeries require an anchor-shaped incision stretching from the bottom of the areola, down along the underside of the breast, and along the sides of the breast crease. The doctor will remove breast and glandular tissue and will re-position the remaining skin and nipple to create the new breast shape. Then the incisions will be carefully stitched to minimize scarring. Significant reductions or sagging breasts may need to have the nipple removed completely, and re-grafted, in order to reshape the breast to its desired shape and size.

Holistic Post-Operative Care

Patients Medical takes a holistic approach to healing. After a breast reduction procedure, the doctor may recommend pre and post-operative treatments that will help speed and improve the healing process, including:

These treatments enhance the body's recovery time and reduce inflammation and scarring.
