Deep Tissue Massage

Patients Medical is pleased to offer Deep Tissue Massage Therapy, performed by our licensed massage therapists and practitioners who have years of experience.

A deep tissue massage utilizes regular massage techniques and takes them to the next level to realign deep layers of muscle and connective tissue.

During a normal massage therapy session, the masseuse will use techniques affecting skin layers, the top muscle layers, joints, fascia, and the lymph system. A greater amount of pressure than in normal massages is used to manipulate these areas. The massage strokes will be noticeably slower, in order to fully penetrate deep tissue layers.

What Is the Purpose of Deep Tissue Massage (DTM)?

Once muscle tension has become chronic, it establishes a pattern in the muscle fibers and pain signals transmitted to the brain. You have probably experienced an area in your own body where you have felt a "knot" of tension. This is an area where muscle fibers have become stuck. It can be difficult for the muscle tissue to return to a normal state without outside manipulation. A DTM works along and across deep muscle tissues in an effort to break up those knots, restore circulation, and interrupt the pattern of tension and pain so healing can begin.

What Are the Benefits of Deep Tissue Massage?

The majority of patients who seek deep tissue massage suffer from areas that are chronically tense, sore or have tangible knots such as the neck, shoulders and lower back. Athletes also enjoy the benefits of deep tissue work (also called Sports Deep Tissue Massage) on their arms, calves, thighs and buttocks as these areas can become chronically tense from the repetitive strain from their chosen sport or activity.

The following are benefits of DTM:

  • Pumping: The stroking movements of the massage suck fluid through blood and lymph vessels. This is especially important in tight or damaged muscle tissue, as a tight muscle will squeeze blood out like a sponge, depriving the tissue of vital nutrients and energy repair.
  • Increased tissue permeability: Deep tissue massage better enables fluids and nutrients to pass through tissue membranes. In turn, this helps remove waste products such as lactic acid and encourages the muscles to take up oxygen and nutrients, which help them recover quicker.
  • Stretching: Massage can stretch tissues that could not be stretched in usual methods. This releases any tension or pressure build up.
  • Breaks down scar tissue: Scar tissue is the result of previous injuries or trauma and can affect muscles, tendons and ligaments, thus leading to inflexible tissues that are prone to injury and pain.

Physiological effects of the deep tissue massage include pain reduction and relaxation. Psychological effects can include anxiety reduction and an invigorating feeling to the patient.
