Ultraviolet Light Therapy

Why Chronic Infections and Inflammation Need a New Approach

In today’s world, chronic infections, autoimmune issues, and immune dysregulation are rising. Standard treatments often involve long-term antibiotics or immune-suppressing medications—with mixed results and potential side effects.

At Patients Medical in New York City, we believe in identifying and treating the root causes of disease using integrative and functional approaches. Ultraviolet Blood Irradiation (UBI)—also known as UV Light Therapy—is a time-tested, natural therapy that can help restore immune balance, improve oxygenation, and reduce inflammation.

What is Ultraviolet Blood Irradiation (UBI)?

UBI is a non-toxic, non-invasive medical procedure that exposes a small amount of your blood to ultraviolet (UV) light before returning it to your bloodstream. This stimulates your immune system, oxygenates tissues, and helps your body fight infections more effectively—without the side effects of harsh drugs.
Originally developed in the 1920s, UBI has been used to treat:

  • Chronic viral infections (Epstein-Barr, herpes, hepatitis)
Bacterial infections (Lyme disease, sinusitis, pneumonia)
  • Autoimmune disorders
  • Chronic fatigue and fibromyalgia
  • Circulatory disorders
  • Inflammatory conditions
  • Mold toxicity and toxin overload

Common Symptoms We Address with UV Light Therapy

Many patients come to us with symptoms that haven’t improved despite conventional treatment:

If you’ve been told “everything looks normal” but still feel unwell, UBI may be part of the solution.

Root Causes: Why Is Your Immune System Struggling?

Through a functional medicine lens, we ask: Why is your body overwhelmed? Common triggers include:

  • Hidden infections (viral, bacterial, fungal, or parasitic)
  • Leaky gut and microbiome imbalances
  • Toxin accumulation (mold, heavy metals, pesticides)
  • Chronic stress and poor sleep
  • Mitochondrial dysfunction
  • Hormonal imbalances
  • Nutrient deficiencies

UBI can be a powerful part of a holistic plan to restore balance and reduce these root triggers.

Diagnostic Testing We Use

At Patients Medical, we don’t guess—we test. We tailor your care plan using:

Complete blood count (CBC) and inflammatory markers (CRP, ESR)

Immune system panels (IgG, IgA, IgM, NK cell activity)

Viral load tests (EBV, CMV, HSV, etc.)

Lyme disease and co-infections panel

Mold and mycotoxin testing

Gut health and leaky gut testing

Heavy metal and environmental toxin screens

Mitochondrial function testing

Integrative Treatments with UV Light Therapy

We rarely use UBI in isolation. Your care plan may also include:

Nutritional Therapy

  • Anti-inflammatory diets to reduce immune load
  • Gut-healing nutrition plans
  • Food sensitivity elimination protocols

IV Therapy

  • High-dose Vitamin C
  • Glutathione for detox support
  • B vitamins and minerals for energy and immune strength

Herbal & Nutraceuticals

  • Antiviral and antimicrobial herbs (oregano oil, cat’s claw, monolaurin)
  • Immune modulators like astragalus and medicinal mushrooms
  • Detox binders for mold and toxins (charcoal, bentonite clay)

Detoxification Support

  • Sauna therapy
  • Colon hydrotherapy
  • Liver support herbs and nutrients

Stress & Hormone Balance

  • Cortisol balancing herbs
  • Thyroid and adrenal testing and support
  • Mind-body interventions (acupuncture, meditation)

Real Case Study: David’s Recovery from Chronic Fatigue

David, 46, came to us exhausted, with a history of Epstein-Barr virus and mold exposure. He had tried multiple supplements and prescriptions with no relief.

After a full workup, we identified:

  • Elevated EBV titers
  • High mycotoxin levels
  • Impaired mitochondrial function

We started him on a 12-week plan including:

  • Weekly UV light therapy
  • IV nutrients
  • Mold detox protocol
  • Sleep and stress optimization

After 3 months, David’s energy improved by over 70%, brain fog cleared, and his viral load dropped significantly. He’s now back to work full-time and thriving.

Yes. It’s been used safely for nearly a century. Only a small amount of blood is treated, and it’s done in a sterile, physician-guided environment.

Protocols typically range from 6 to 10 sessions depending on your condition. Some patients benefit from ongoing maintenance.

UBI is not typically covered. However, we offer payment plans and superbills for reimbursement.

UBI is a supportive therapy. It may reduce the need for medications, but we always coordinate with your prescribing physician.

Patients with porphyria, certain cancers, or those on photosensitizing drugs should not receive UBI.
