What causes restless leg syndrome?

The exact cause of restless leg syndrome (RLS) is not fully understood, but it is believed to be related to problems with the regulation of dopamine, a chemical messenger in the brain that helps to control muscle movement. Some research suggests that RLS may be genetic, and that certain genes may make a person more susceptible to developing the disorder. Other probable causes or risk factors include iron deficiency, kidney disease, pregnancy, and certain medications. Additionally, some studies have found a link between RLS and other conditions such as peripheral neuropathy, varicose veins, and chronic venous insufficiency.
