Disequilibrium

Disequilibrium is a feeling of unsteadiness or imbalance, which may cause you to feel like you are going to fall. It is often caused by problems in the central nervous system, such as multiple sclerosis or Parkinson's disease.

Symptoms

  • Feeling unsteady or off-balance
  • Difficulty standing or walking.
  • Feeling like you might fall.
  • Difficulty with coordination and balance
  • Nausea or vomiting
  • Visual changes or trouble focusing

Causes

  • Neurological conditions such as multiple sclerosis, Parkinson's disease, or stroke
  • Medications that affect balance, such as sedatives or antipsychotics
  • Inner ear problems such as Meniere's disease or vestibular neuritis
  • Musculoskeletal problems such as arthritis or degenerative disc disease

Types

  • Peripheral vestibular disorders: caused by problems in the inner ear, such as BPPV, vestibular neuritis, or Meniere's disease
  • Central vestibular disorders: caused by problems in the central nervous system, such as multiple sclerosis or Parkinson's disease

Testing

  • Neurological exams to assess muscle strength, reflexes, and coordination
  • Imaging tests such as MRI or CT scans.
  • Blood tests to evaluate blood sugar levels, electrolyte balance, and liver and kidney function

Conventional treatment

  • Treatment for disequilibrium is aimed at treating the underlying condition causing the symptoms. For example, physical therapy may be used to improve balance and coordination in patients with Parkinson's disease.

Functional medicine treatments

  • Identifying and addressing underlying triggers such as food sensitivities, inflammation, and hormonal imbalances.
  • Supporting the body's natural healing processes through dietary and lifestyle changes.

IV drip therapy

  • IV therapy may help to replenish nutrient deficiencies and provide support for the body's natural healing processes.

Recommended supplements for support

  • Omega-3 fatty acids
  • Coenzyme Q10 (CoQ10)
  • Vitamin D3 and K2
  • Magnesium
  • B-complex vitamins

It is important to work with a healthcare professional to determine the underlying cause of disequilibrium and develop an appropriate treatment plan.
