What triggers restless leg syndrome?

There are several things that can trigger symptoms of Restless Leg Syndrome (RLS), including:

  • Sitting or lying down for prolonged periods of time, such as when watching television or reading a book
  • Being inactive or sedentary
  • Being in a car or airplane for long periods of time
  • Being under stress or anxious
  • Being pregnant, especially in the last trimester
  • Taking certain medications, such as antidepressants, antipsychotics, or cold and allergy medications
  • Having low levels of iron in the blood (anemia)
  • Having certain medical conditions such as chronic kidney disease, diabetes, or peripheral neuropathy

It's worth noting that different people with RLS may have different triggers and what triggers RLS in one person may not trigger it in another person.
