How do you get a yeast infection?

Yeast infections are caused by an overgrowth of a type of fungus called Candida.

Some common causes of yeast infections include:

  • Antibiotics use: Antibiotics can disrupt the balance of bacteria in the body, allowing yeast to overgrow.
  • Hormonal changes: Yeast infections are more common during pregnancy, menopause, or menstruation when hormonal changes occur.
  • A weakened immune system: People with weakened immune systems, such as those with HIV or AIDS, are at a higher risk of developing yeast infections.
  • Diabetes: People with diabetes are at a higher risk of developing yeast infections because high blood sugar levels can create an environment that is conducive to yeast growth.
  • Uncontrolled diabetes or high blood sugar levels can increase the risk of recurrent yeast infection.
  • Dampness or moisture: Yeast infections can occur in warm, moist areas of the body, such as the groin, under the breasts, or in skin folds.
  • Wearing tight-fitting, non-breathable clothing or underwear can trap moisture and create a warm environment that is conducive to yeast growth.

It is important to note that yeast infections can also be caused by sexual transmission, so it is essential to practice safe sex and to avoid sharing personal items such as towels or underwear with others.
