What is a leaky gut?

Leaky gut syndrome, also known as increased intestinal permeability, is a condition in which the gut barrier becomes damaged, allowing harmful substances such as toxins, bacteria, and undigested food particles to leak through the gut wall and into the bloodstream. The gut lining is meant to be selective, allowing nutrients and water to pass through while keeping the larger molecules such as toxins, undigested food and bacteria out. When the gut lining is damaged, these larger molecules can pass through, triggering an immune response and leading to inflammation. This can cause a variety of symptoms, including abdominal pain, bloating, gas, and food sensitivities, and may also contribute to a wide range of health problems such as autoimmune disorders and chronic fatigue. The exact causes of leaking gut syndrome are not well understood, but it is believed to be related to factors such as chronic inflammation, stress, and a diet high in processed foods and sugar.
