What is leaky gut syndrome?

Leaky gut syndrome, also known as increased intestinal permeability, is a condition where the lining of the gut becomes damaged, allowing harmful substances such as toxins, bacteria, and undigested food particles to leak through the gut wall and into the bloodstream. This can occur due to a variety of factors such as chronic inflammation, stress, and a diet high in processed foods and sugar.

Normally, the gut lining acts as a barrier, allowing only properly digested nutrients to pass through while keeping out larger molecules and harmful substances. When the gut lining is damaged, these larger molecules and harmful substances can pass through, triggering an immune response, and leading to inflammation. This can cause a variety of symptoms, including abdominal pain, bloating, gas, and food sensitivities, and may also contribute to a wide range of health problems such as autoimmune disorders and chronic fatigue.

Leaky gut syndrome is not yet well understood by the medical community and more research is needed to fully understand the condition, its causes and its consequences. However, it is believed that it can be caused by a combination of factors such as chronic inflammation, stress, poor diet, and certain medical conditions.
