What is testosterone?

Testosterone is a steroid hormone that is primarily produced in the testes of men and the ovaries of women. It plays a key role in the development of male reproductive tissues, such as the testis and prostate, as well as promoting secondary sexual characteristics, such as increased muscle and bone mass, and the growth of body hair. Testosterone also plays a role in sperm production, sexual function, and the metabolism of bone and muscle tissue. It is an important hormone in the body and is tightly regulated in the body, though changes in levels can happen due to age, disease or lifestyle.

Testosterone is a male sex hormone that plays a key role in the development and maintenance of male reproductive and sexual function, as well as in muscle and bone mass. Testosterone is produced in the testicles, but lesser amounts are also produced in the adrenal glands. Testosterone levels naturally decrease as men age but can also be affected by certain medical conditions or treatments.

Testosterone is important for the development of the male reproductive system, including the testes and prostate. It also promotes the development of secondary sexual characteristics, such as facial and body hair, a deeper voice, and muscle mass. It plays a role in sperm production, sex drive and can influence bone mass, red blood cell production, and mood.

Low levels of testosterone, a condition known as hypogonadism, can cause a variety of symptoms, such as low sex drive, erectile dysfunction, fatigue, depression, and decreased muscle and bone mass. These symptoms can be treated with testosterone replacement therapy (TRT) under the close supervision of a medical professional.
