What is the main cause of yeast infection?

The main cause of yeast infections is the overgrowth of a type of fungus called Candida. Candida is a type of yeast that is naturally present in the body, particularly in warm, moist areas such as the mouth, throat, and vagina. However, certain factors can cause Candida to overgrow and lead to an infection.

The most common cause of yeast infections is an imbalance of the bacteria and yeast in the body. The balance of bacteria and yeast can be disrupted by several factors such as:

  • Antibiotic use: Antibiotics can kill off healthy bacteria in the body, allowing yeast to overgrow.
  • Hormonal changes: Yeast infections are more common during pregnancy, menopause, or menstruation when hormonal changes occur.
  • A weakened immune system: People with weakened immune systems, such as those with HIV or AIDS, are at a higher risk of developing yeast infections.
  • Diabetes: People with diabetes are at a higher risk of developing yeast infections because high blood sugar levels can create an environment that is conducive to yeast growth.
  • Dampness or moisture: Yeast infections can occur in warm, moist areas of the body, such as the groin, under the breasts, or in skin folds.

It is important to note that yeast infections can also be caused by sexual transmission, so it is essential to practice safe sex and to avoid sharing personal items such as towels or underwear with others.
