Where is testosterone produced?

Testosterone is primarily produced in the testicles, specifically in the Leydig cells located in the testicles. These cells are responsible for producing the majority of the body's testosterone. A small amount of testosterone is also produced by the adrenal glands, which are located above the kidneys.

Testosterone production in men begins to increase during puberty, and it typically reaches its peak during early adulthood. After that, it starts to decline with age, usually after the age of 30. This decline can be caused by a variety of factors, including age, obesity, certain medical conditions, and certain medications.

The hypothalamus and pituitary gland located in the brain also play a key role in regulating testosterone production. The hypothalamus releases gonadotropin-releasing hormone (GnRH), which stimulates the pituitary gland to release luteinizing hormone (LH) and follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH). These hormones then signal the testicles to produce testosterone.

It is worth mentioning that there are also synthetic testosterone products (testosterone replacement therapy) that can be used to treat low levels of testosterone, or a medical condition caused by low levels of testosterone, called hypogonadism. These products are available as injections, gels, patches, pellets, and buccal tablets, and only used under the direction of a healthcare provider.
