Cardiovascular Support Supplements
by Marc A. Nolan, MD
For those who may be genetically predisposed to heart disease our cardiovascular support formulas can help with prevention. Regular use of these supplements can help you address the underlying causes of heart disease using a holistic approach. Carefully formulated to address changes in metabolic pathways associated with degenerative changes and cardiovascular disease, the ingredients featured in our cardiovascular formulations include such diverse medicinal herbs and compounds as the following:
Guggul resin extract (Commiphora mukul)—Widely used throughout Asia for centuries, the Ayurvedic herbal extract from the Commiphora tree, known as guggul, is now coming into increased use worldwide as a cholesterol-lowering agent. The constituents of the resin known as guggulsterones are believed responsible for many of the therapeutic and cardioprotective properties of C. mukul.
Hawthorn berries (Crataegus sp.)—Hawthorn is a small flowering tree in the Rose family, a close cousin to the apples and crabapples with a lengthy, worldwide tradition of use as a cardiac tonic. As borne out in an extensive body of scientific literature, hawthorn is known for myriad actions on the cardiovascular system, including hypotensive (blood pressure–lowering), antiatheromatous (anti-plaque), and coronarodilatating (coronary artery–expanding) effects. A protective effect for the heart has also been proposed for its antioxidant activities. Crataegus extract is in current use for the treatment of high blood pressure, angina, cardiac arrhythmias, and congestive heart failure, and studies on animals suggest it may also have anti-ischemic and lipid-lowering properties. Regular use can, for example, help protect the heart from the damaging effects of hypertension caused by daily stress.
Methyl tetrahydrofolate—Unlike most forms of folate (folic acid, or vitamin B9) found in nutritional supplements, methyl tetrahydrofolate is a highly bioavailable form that requires no further metabolic processing before the body can put it to use. Depending on ethnicity and other genetic factors, anywhere between 20–50% of the population carries a set of variants in the MTHFR gene that can compromise folate metabolism in the body, leading to lifelong folate deficiency. These variants are associated with problems with methylation, an important component of the body's detoxification pathways, as well as with key metabolic disturbances that promote higher than average levels of inflammatory markers and cardiovascular disease.
