Staten Island Ultraviolet Blood Irradiation Therapy for Pain Management: Update

Patients Medical (212-794-8800) is announcing an updated ultraviolet blood irradiation therapy for chronic disease management.

Ultraviolet blood irradiation (UBI) therapy is a treatment that exposes a small amount of the patient’s blood to UV light to trigger an immune response and reduce inflammation. With the recent announcement, Patients Medical is giving the residents of Staten Island a non-pharmaceutical option for pain relief and chronic disease management.

Patients Medical’s service update coincides with a research paper published by the National Library of Medicine about the effectiveness of UBI against infections and autoimmune conditions. According to the report, UBI is effective against antibiotic-resistant bacterial and viral infections in immunocompromised patients or those with severe medication allergies. At the holistic wellness center, UBI is also used to minimize inflammatory markers associated with painful chronic illnesses like rheumatoid arthritis, lupus, and multiple sclerosis.

UBI is a minimally invasive process that starts with a nurse drawing around 200 ccs of the patient's blood, which is then passed through a quartz cuvette that has been exposed to ultraviolet light. The irradiated blood is then returned to the patient, together with some anticoagulants, which eliminate the possibility of blood clots during the transfusion.

Patients Medical states that some patients may feel some “flushing” and mild flu-like symptoms after the procedure, but these side effects clear up after resting for an hour or so in the clinic. Patients can drive, do their everyday activities, and take whatever maintenance medication they have after the session. The effects of UBI are seen gradually, and patients with chronic diseases might start noticing that they need less pain medication after the treatment.

The wellness center believes in approaching disease not only by masking the symptoms but by finding and treating the root cause of the problem. With UBI, patients may be able to minimize the medications they need to take, improve their quality of life, and stabilize their condition while waiting for lifesaving procedures like organ transplants or chemotherapy.

“Patients Medical is a superb place for people to secure integrative and holistic health care from providers who give personalized care, partner with the patient to focus on the root cause of their illness, support their recovery, and help them maintain good health,” a representative said.
