Can Lyme disease be cured?

Lyme disease is usually curable with appropriate antibiotic treatment. If caught early, a course of oral antibiotics such as doxycycline, amoxicillin, or cefuroxime axetil can typically cure the infection within a few weeks. If the disease is caught in later stages, intravenous antibiotics such as ceftriaxone or penicillin may be required, and the treatment may take longer. Most people with Lyme disease recover fully after treatment, but in some cases, symptoms such as fatigue, joint and muscle pain, and neurological symptoms may persist. This is called post-treatment Lyme disease syndrome (PTLDS), also known as chronic Lyme disease. The cause of PTLDS is not well understood and the effectiveness of prolonged antibiotic treatment for PTLDS is controversial. Some patients may benefit from other therapies such as physical therapy, cognitive behavioral therapy and other medications to manage symptoms. It's important to consult a doctor if you suspect you have been infected with Lyme disease and follow the treatment plan recommended by your healthcare provider.
