What causes Premenstrual Syndrome?

The exact cause of Premenstrual Syndrome (PMS) is not known, but it is believed to be caused by hormonal changes that occur during the menstrual cycle. The levels of estrogen and progesterone, which are female hormones, fluctuate throughout the menstrual cycle. It is thought that these changes may affect the levels of other hormones and chemicals in the brain, leading to the physical and emotional symptoms of PMS.
Other factors that may contribute to PMS include:

  • Genetics: Some women may be more susceptible to PMS due to their genes.
  • Nutrition: A diet that is low in certain nutrients, such as calcium and vitamin D, may increase the risk of PMS.
  • Stress: Elevated levels of stress can make PMS symptoms worse.
  • Medical conditions: Certain medical conditions, such as thyroid disorders, can cause symptoms like PMS.

It's also worth noting that PMS can be classified into two types, i.e., physical and psychological, with physical symptoms being more commonly observed than psychological symptoms.
